We are Fishpeople
Fishpeople is fueled by a dedication to sustaining fishing communities, stewarding ocean resources and nourishing you. We envision a seafood industry that rewards the many instead of the few.
We are here to share the story of your fish. The story of the people and watershed that your purchase supports. Our products are an ode to our industry, the last industry that hunts for a living. An industry where the currency of the realm is one’s integrity, where doing what you say you will is the difference between the good and the not so good. When you shake someone’s hand and look them in the eye do you mean what you say? We do. Our partners do.
That is what makes this industry special. It is what makes us a family. It also is what can make things hard. Commitment can be difficult when the fish don’t swim like they are supposed to. When the seas boil with the wrath of winter and the ice machine breaks. When your market suddenly evaporates. It is in the crucible of hard times that relationships are forged and your mettle is tested. Where you are forced to cultivate the art of taking the long view and forgoing the short term frustration. Where you discover who you can trust and who you can’t.
Our industry hasn’t always delivered on its promises to the consumer. Whether its short-cuts on quality or the rampant mis-labeling and fraud you hear about. Seafood can be rough. We aim to help change that. To be a fishmonger of which the 21st century can be proud.
We operate three retail markets, two in Oregon (Hood River and Garibaldi) and one in Ilwaco, Washington. We also own our own landing and processing facility in Garibaldi, Oregon where we buy directly from the fleet. We maintain relationships with folks like us all over the US and all over the world. Some catch wild and some cultivate. Together we want to make a difference. A family of people that work hard to catch fish, offload fish, protect watersheds, advance sustainable aquaculture, and collaborate with policy makers because they love fish and they want to share that love with you.
Reward the many instead of the few.
We Aim to Serve:
by protecting fish stocks for future generations.
We're committed to the health of our oceans and the fish that live in them. Sustainable fishing practices reduce bycatch and protect quality, resulting in delicious seafood and a healthier ocean. Sustainable aquaculture can do the same if done well and has an important role to play in feeding a planet hungry for healthy seafood.
by creating good jobs and strong markets.
Did you know that 90% of seafood caught in America is exported and 90% of seafood we eat is imported? While some imports make sense, such an over-reliance is just bad math. We seek more balance. By first sourcing directly from independent fishermen on our own docks, Fishpeople creates jobs and supports rural fishing communities. We believe we can then also partner and apply similar values in other regions.
People Who Love Fish
by bringing high quality, sustainable delicacies to your door.
We are committed to feeding your family the same quality fish we feed our families and “good enough” just isn’t good enough. We want the best of what the oceans have to offer and believe you deserve it too. When you care about your supply chain as much as you care about the people gathering around your dinner table, both truly thrive.
Four Founders, Common Threads
Mix a couple of fishermen with an artist and a finance geek, you get Fishpeople.
We seek purpose. We like to play. We give for joy. We try to leave things better than we found them. We believe in making seafood great again. Thanks for reading this far. ☺
